What is an Optometrist?
An optometrist is a Doctor of Optometry, or OD. Optometrists must first complete four years of undergraduate studies before being specifically educated and trained at a four-year accredited optometry college. An optometrist is licensed to provide primary eye care services, including the eye exam, diagnosis and treatment of visual conditions, and the ability to prescribe glasses, contact lenses and medications. Optometrists can diagnose and treat common eye conditions; however, optometrists are not trained or licensed to perform eye surgery. At Professional Eye Associates, our optometrists work closely with our ophthalmologists to provide the best eye care for our patients.
